Located in the picturesque city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang University (ZJU) is the most comprehensive leading university in China, with a long history, unique features and high reputations in education and research. Supported by resources from the University, Medical School, and six affiliated hospitals, ZJU has recently established a new institute committed to translational research, namely the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) with the capacity to recruit 80 investigators in various research fields. To date, the ITM has recruited more than 20 investigators and held its opening ceremony on May 6,2014. The major goal of the ITM is, through multi-disciplinary and cross-functional collaborations, to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice for better translation of bench breakthrough to bedside therapy. Using state of the art technologies, the investigators at the ITM will start with clinical problems 1) to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of diseases and 2) to invent new devices for the improvement of clinical diagnosis and therapy. The areas of major research focus include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and new medical device development. The ITM at ZJU is striving to fulfill the urgent medical need to accelerate translation of basic research for the benefit of patients and general public.
