Research direction

Tumor suppressor gene TP53, the “Guardian of the Genome”, is the most frequently mutated gene in human tumors and usually expressed at high levels. p53 mutations, do not only serve to inactivate normal p53, but may also endow the mutant protein with novel properties, so called Gain-of-function (GOF) activities, that could contribute to tumor development, makes mutant p53 a striking target for novel cancer therapy. Therefore, novel therapeutic strategies that target mutant p53-carrying tumors could significantly improve clinical outcome in cancer patients. My current research endeavor is aimed at functional characterization of potential actionable targets in p53 mutated tumors and defining the factors required for the triggering of mutant-p53 as well as the biological consequences of expressing the mutant p53 gene in human cancers.
